Sports Science: chicken wings

This term in Sport Science we have been learning about muscular, skeletal and articular systems. We are learning the functions of bone and muscles, different types of joints and the types of movements they allow.

We have completed two mini tests naming 26 bones and 24 muscles. Following these, we had a major test this week on the bones, muscles and joints.

On Wednesday 21 March we undertook a dissection of a chicken wing. Chickens and humans have many similar muscles and bones so it was very interesting to look at how out bodies work.

We first removed the skin of the chicken wing and discussed the muscles we saw such as the bicep, tricep and brachioradialis, the three main muscles of the arm.

We then carefully took the muscles away and looked at the bones structure and joints. We even got the chance to snap the humerous and look at the inside of the bone.

We looked at components such as cartilage and bone marrow, and we talked about what their roles were in our body. This was a fun and slightly weird way to learn about our own muscles and bones.
