This month we are gearing up to host a group of special visitors to ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ from the Don Bosco Technical Centre in Alafua, Samoa.
The Don Bosco Technical Centre offers a ‘second chance’ to around 180 young Samoans. Many of these young men have struggled to successfully complete or continue in mainstream schooling. The centre offers two-year and four-year trade training courses.
We have been fundraising for the Don Bosco Technical Centre to maintain their programs and outreach to vulnerable young men for many years.
The Samoan Siva Tour comes to ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ
During August and September, 45 students from the Don Bosco Technical Centre Samoa will embark on a three-week sponsored Australian tour and will visit ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ 4-6 September.
The Don Bosco Technical Centre is renowned for its traditional siva (dance), and the Centre’s students are often invited to perform at public celebrations, and important events. In Samoa, dance or siva as it is called locally, is an essential element of Samoan life and culture. In recent years the Don Bosco Technical Centre dance troupe has performed at the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 United Nations Small Island Developing Nations Conference and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games.
Opportunities to be a part of Siva
Members of our school community will have the opportunity to be a part of the Siva Tour. The Siva students will lead mass at St John’s Parish Glenorchy at 6.00pm on Sunday 4 September with a cultural show afterwards. All families are warmly welcome to this evening.
Our signature event will be the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ Community Breakfast on Tuesday morning 6 September 7.15am – 8.30am. Students and parents K-10 are invited to this very special opportunity to enjoy breakfast together and to experience the fantastic dancing and entertainment of the Samoan Siva Tour.
Tickets to the breakfast and show are $10.00 per person. Bookings for the breakfast are now available on-line through our College website (community events):
I know that the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ community will absolutely love this unique event and thoroughly enjoy this cultural exchange.
