Sacrament of Confirmation
Last Sunday, Archbishop Julian Porteous presided over the sacramental ceremony of Confirmation for a group of ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ students at St John’s parish.
As our students received the sacrament, they opened themselves to receive God’s blessings and make a commitment to be faithful to God.
In the Catholic tradition, the sacraments are both signs and instruments of God’s grace in our lives. During Confirmation, our students, their families and parish community prayed that each child will be filled with the Holy Spirit. Our Church teaches that the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit are:
- Wisdom to see God at work in their lives and in the world, especially to be able to see God in everyone and everything, everywhere.
- Understanding to comprehend how they need to live the right way as a follower of Christ.
- Right Judgment to know the difference between right and wrong and to choose to do what is right.
- Courage to overcome fear and be willing to take risks as a follower of Christ; to stand up for what is right in the sight of God.
- Knowledge to understand the meaning of God in their lives.
- Reverence to have a deep sense of respect for God and the church.
- Wonder and Awe of the glory and majesty of God and God’s perfection in all things.
I am grateful to our wonderful parents who have attended sacramental preparation sessions with their children, supporting and encouraging them in their Christian faith within the traditions of the Catholic Church.
