Music & Dance Showcase an amazing evening

On Thursday night 19 September, the College held our third annual Showcase of Music and Dance at the Don Bosco Creative Arts Centre at Guilford Young College. Indeed it was a wonderful showcase of performing arts talent from Years 3-10.

One of the outstanding features of the evening was the high student participation with over 100 students performing on stage. In addition to these students, there were a number of students involved in backstage management, technical production and front of house. Students also compered the show with confidence and maturity.

There was an excellent variety and diversity across the production program which was well structured and aptly named a ‘showcase’. Feedback from the audience has indicated that the quality of performances was impressive and the group work strong and disciplined. Student pride in their work, sense of belief in and connectivity to each other was underpinned by substantial student skill and talent.

A wonderful evening was sold out for the 3rd consecutive year. The Showcase is our chance to present large scale Music & Dance performances which students at the College have been working on throughout the year. Over 150 performers and crew were involved.

This year the evening began with a performance by Dominiku Daiko Senior, a group that is developing a repertoire in Taiko drumming. There were performances by our Rock Band, Choirs, Junior and Senior Concert Bands, Clarinet Ensemble as well as original dance works by our two Year 8 Elective Dance classes and our 9/10 Dance class.

The evening concluded with a spectacular finale involving the entire cast of performers.

Mrs Denholm once again was responsible for curating the evening, supported by Mr Smith and our wonderful music tutors, Mark Schmalfuss, John Keenan, Brett Budgeon and Hans Kooij. Our visiting exchange teacher from Shizuoka Salesio, Japan, Mr Akihiro Shimomoura gave valuable support to our Taiko Drumming troupe with Mrs Kumashiro and Mrs Allan.

Shimomura sensei’s expertise with the saxophone was featured in the Senior Concert Band. Dance tutor extraordinaire, Miss Jenina Evans, in her fifth year working with the Creative Arts team at the college, choreographed the Dance works to her usual exacting standard.

It was a night that highlighted the broad range of talent and hard work exhibited by our students and was gratefully appreciated by the audience.
