House debating at ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ has enjoyed a revival over the last few years, and helps students gain some experience in a supportive environment, as well as sharpening their skills.
Over the past few weeks students have been participating in the 2017 House debating competition, with points going to the Academic Shield.
There were two age groups, 7/8 and 9/10. The topics for these debates have ranged from the issues of mobile phones and social media, to issues regarding sport and part time work.
The Year 7/8 final was on Wednesday 27 September, and they debated the topic ‘The grass is always greener on the other side’,
Siena was the affirmative team, and Savio was the negative team. It was an exciting debate, with both teams bringing excellent arguments, and fantastic rebuttals. It was a very close result, with Siena House edging out Savio by two points.
The Year 9/10 final topic was ‘Innocence is bliss’ with Siena House as the affirmative team, and Savio House as the negative team. In a close debate, Savio triumphed.
I would like to congratulate everyone who has participated in these debates, it takes a great deal of preparation and courage to be able to stand up and argue your points.
A big thank you to the students and teachers who have judged the debates, the people who came to support the teams and especially to Mr Fulton, for without him the debating competition would not have gone ahead so successfully.
I encourage students in 2018 to try out debating!
