Adventure Recreation Extension Program – Bruny Island Surf Camp
Over the Easter Break a keen group of Adventure Recreation students took the opportunity to take part in the Extension Program for the year.
This Extension program was an opportunity for students to extend the surfing skills they have been developing throughout the term, immersing themselves in a new environment. The Surf Camp was held on Bruny Island, a surfing mecca that offered a variety of waves for our budding young surfers.
Leading up to this camp both Adventure Recreation classes have been undertaking a comprehensive surfing unit where they not only learnt the skill of surfing but also how to analyse a coastal venue; identifying potential hazards and develop strategies to mitigate the associated risks.
The students also learnt about wave formation and how they can vary when they break. Armed with this knowledge, the students can then select the appropriate gear to surf a particular wave. These initial lessons were centered around Clifton Beach, where students have had the opportunity to work with expert coaches from Coastrider Surfing Academy, who showed them how to ride the waves with style.
On Bruny Island, the students experienced some great surfing conditions at the south facing beach, Cloudy Bay, which receives the powerful Southern Ocean swell, making for a premier surfing location.
Students were able to get three surfing sessions in over the two days, accompanied by two expert surfing instructors, Falk and Hannah, who spent the two days personally coaching each student, enabling them to make the most of the swell.
This coming weekend, a second group will get the same opportunity to extend their surfing skills with the Coastrider Instructors on beautiful Bruny Island. A special thanks to Coastrider Surfing Academy who have helped support our Adventure Recreation Program and their continued work with ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ.
