Academic Pathway evening

On Tuesday 20 August over 400 parents and students from Year 7, 8 and 9 descended upon the Savio Centre for our annual Academic Pathway Evening.

The terrible weather did not deter families from attending this important event in the life of the College. This shows how much our school community value the opportunity to seek advice on pathways for students so they can get the best out of the educational programs offered at ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ.

Faculty teams put together fantastic displays demonstrating the exciting learning opportunities in their respective subject areas.

For Year 7 students and their families, the evening provided an opportunity to find out about the elective offerings in Year 8 as it is the first time students can choose their options.

The Academic Pathway evening gives access to the specialist teachers who teach the elective options and supports students and their parents in making decisions about their preferences.

Ms Gilligan shared some wise advice about making choices and the best way to approach making selections from the wide array of choices we offer.

It was very interesting to see the range of choices that our Year 10 student leaders had made over the course of their schooling from Year 8 through to Year 10.

The Academic Captains were on hand to act as hosts for the evening and were available to share their first hand experience with our elective program.

Year 8 and 9 students who have already experienced electives at the Year 8 level were able to find out about further elective options for Year 9 and 10.

It is often advisable for students to plan their elective preferences over two years as they consider when would be the best time for them to study particular options.

To further support their thinking around future pathways following Year 10 and beyond, we had a number of external providers set up displays and share useful information.

We would like to thank representatives from GYC, UTAS and Foundry for giving up their time to come along to our Academic Pathway evening and provide valuable advice and guidance for students and parents.

In addition, Ms Jacinta Pearce, who looks after Career Pathways, and Ms Beth Gilligan and Mr Stephen Casni, our Principal and Deputy Principal, were there to advise students and parents.

Students have until Saturday 31 August 7.00pm to submit their preferences and reserves.

Students in Year 7 choosing Year 8 electives for 2020 are required to submit 4 preferences and 3 reserves in order of preference.

Year 8 and 9 students choosing Year 9 or 10 electives for 2020 are required to submit 3 preferences and 2 reserves in order of preference.

If students or parents have any questions about students' choices feel free to contact Mrs Janet Marcenko, Coordinator of Teaching & Learning 7-10, or Mrs Selina Kinne, Director of Teaching & Learning K-10, or any of the elective teachers who can advise about these subjects.

The Subject Handbook contains descriptors of all subjects offered and can be found on the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ Website, under 'Programs' and then '7-10,' or you can digitally link here: ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ Subject Handbook 2020
